How to give up smoking?

I’ve been smoking for three years…sometimes i smoke 4 cigs a day sometimes over a packet. I want to quit smoking but it’s quite hard because here we have no medical centres dealing with this issue. One the other hand i do not have a support group cheering for me.
recently i’ve bought some pills to keep me off the smokes but they only seem to contribute to the craving and make me want to smoke more and more.
another problem is gaining weight.after 3 consecutive attempts at giving up the habit i gained 30 pounds after them.
i feel at a loss here. what should i do and how. thank you
i have started smoking only half a cig or take only a few puffs when i feel the urge, but whenever i go out with my friends i cannot help myself not smoking…

and again … need some info on "managing" my weight during the process

I believe you should get yourself together.
Firstly, you need to work out on a daily basis.
Secondly, try to get the opinion of one or more doctors.
Thirdly gradually cut down on the number of cigs you smoke. I know you can borrow from friends and all but try not to. keep an empty packet at hand and put 3 cigs in it every day and have only those cigs with you, like a ratio …or if 3 cigs is too drastic for you, start up with a number you feel best comfortable with and try to lower the number every other day(that is how it worked for me)
You could also try to find a close friend of yours that smokes and try to talk him/her into not smoking.
walk more, in the evening, in the park, avoid crouds of smokers, avoid going out with people that smoke or at least try sitting in the no smoking section
i really hope it helps. i haven’t smoked in 2 years

How long after you give up smoking, does it get easier to cope with??!!?

I gave up 5 days ago, I am currently wearing patches but I still get cravings now and then, I am not sleeping at night and I am getting headaches. When will it get easier??!!
Thanks for your comments – I am 100% not going to cave in, I am determined to kick it forever!

Well done, I quit 7 months ago and I found that it only gets easier. Difficulty in sleeping and headaches are common side effects, I found it difficult to sleep around week 2. As others have suggested you might want to stop using patches, they only make things worse. With the right mental approach you will not need any nicotine replacement.

Cravings are best dealt with by understanding them not feeding your body nicotine, the addiction will never fully be broken. Read Allen Carrs easyway book if you find things difficult, after smoking for 29 years and failing to quit many times it was a true source of inspiration to me and the trigger to finally help me quit.

How can I persuade my cat to give up smoking?

He has taken to smoking my Dad’s pipe of an evening, and has taken over the best armchair (he is currently reading Middlemarch and so is sat there for the best part of the day). He has also starting wearing my reading glasses which is quite annoying as I need them to study, and after numerous scrapes with the dog next door I have caught him trying to pick the lock on my gun cabinet.

He is the gentleman of the house as he is always opening the door for my mother and taking off his hat when he comes in from work, although my dad is annoyed that he has taken to wearing his best tweed jacket; the cat may think it looks smart but it’s much too big. More annoying still is the fact that he is learning Hungarian off of an audiotape and the machine keeps us awake way in to the early hours.

He has now developed a nose for fine brandy and is getting paw marks all over our best crystal, as well as tobacco stains. He is also annoyed over the fact I won’t let him borrow the car.

    Help?!
His name is Tibbles, by the way, but he now prefers to be called Mr Pitt-Smythe. I don’t know where he got the double-barrelled surname from- do you think he has illusions of grandeur?

You need to find him another hobby to keep him busy. Perhaps gardening so he can be out in the fresh air or astronomy (since he seems to be up late and it’s quieter than the Hungarian audiotapes!).
